What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy increases most people’s healing abilities. It involves you relaxing in a HBOT chamber, and then slightly and gradually we increase the atmospheric pressure. During that time you breath pure oxygen and NOT room air. (The normal air we breath is only 15 - 20% oxygen) This saturates the tissues with oxygen and reverses any areas of hypoxia (low oxygen areas). Some of the effects this has are to promote angiogenesis ( the growth of new blood vessels) decreases swelling and inflammation, deactivates toxins, increases the body’s ability to fight infections, clears out toxins and metabolic waste products, and improves the rate of healing.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been around since the 1600’s so its development is almost 350 years old. There have been extensive studies done all over the world by most of the major Universities of Medicine and its effectiveness has been well established.

What will my Hyperbaric Therapy be like?

First of all, everyone is apprehensive in the begining. It’s normal to be nervous. The overall experience is quite pleasant - especially after the 5th or 10th session.  As you build up more and more oxygen in your system, you will start to feel a change that offers a glipse of health which often means you’ll feel better, sooner.

Before starting your treatments we will ask you to start on some antioxidants two days before your first treatment. (Amounts should be discussed with your Physician.)

    • • 400 mg daily of Vitamin E
    • • Magnesium
    • • Ascorbic Acid

On the day of your treatment; first pick your snack and your entertainment, use the restroom and afterward change into a 100% cotton gown. Upon entering the chamber you can get comfortable with pillows and a blanket if you like.
    Feel Better with Oxygen therapy
As the treatment begins you feel a little pressure on your ears, much like that of being in an airplane. (Ear popping during ascent and decent) It is important to clear your ears constantly during this initial time. (Yawning, chewing, and opening your mouth wide, all can help.) It is normal to hear a constant shhhhhhh sound as the pure oxygen enters the inlet and then what you exhale, or off gas, exits through the exhaust. As the pressure increases it gets a little warmer but is never uncomfortable. This initial “decent period” usually last about 10 minutes. If the pressure is uncomfortable simply notify the technician and the decent period can be slowed down. Don’t try to tough it out! Sipping on water during the pressurization can help young ones clear their ears.

You will be at depth for 60 - 90 minutes (that’s when you relax and watch a movie or listen to CDs) and then ascend back up to sea level which will take about 10 minutes. During this “ascent period” the air becomes cooler. Again it is important to clear the ears during this time. After your treatment it is normal to have to go to the bathroom right away. Take your time, drink your water or have some tea. Make sure you bring a container to bring home our filtered Kangen/Nikken water when you go. When you get home take a great nap!
