What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) prescribed for?

Advanced Hyperbaric Recovery is a physician-referred outpatient rehabilitation facility that specializes in treating patients that have lingering or persistent health problems. They also treat those with sub-clinical illnesses who do not need hospitalization but are simply too ill to allow for a true Quality of Life.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved treatment for the following 13 indications:

Acute Traumatic Ischemia
Air or Gas Embolism
Anemia – Exceptional Blood Loss
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Compromised Skin Flaps
Cyanide Poisoning
Decompression Sickness
Gas Gangrene
Multiple Sclerosis
Necrotizing Infections
Radiation Effects
Some cases of Osteomyelitis
Some non-healing wounds
Thermal or Extensive Burns

Indications Justified Internationally

HBOT is approved in the United States for the indications listed below; however, internationally, HBOT has a much broader list of applications, many supported by even stronger scientific evidence than what exists for the approved indications (approval means these indications have received the blessing of the HBOT committee of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, and secondarily by the FDA). The FDA considers the use of HBOT for indications not on the accepted list as being off-label.

Physicians are allowed to use any FDA approved medical device or drug for off-label indications as long as no claims are made. This practice has generated much of the data that forms the basis of clinical medical research, and the use of FDA approved drugs for off-label indications occurs everyday in nearly every doctor’s office and hospital across the USA.

We have treated convalescent patients whose caregivers say that a HBOT treatment every week to two weeks helps prevent bed sores from developing. It can also be very helpful when done before and after surgery and can also be used as a general wellness therapy.
